Opera draws huge crowd to Trafalgar Park

It was a perfect night for Nelson Opera in the Park, with 7500 people turning out to enjoy a first class lineup of New Zealand musicians. The event was once again a huge success, says organiser Pete Rainey. “But you can’t really go wrong, people just love the opportunity to come out and relax in the park and listen to some nice music.” The crowds came bearing blankets, chairs, picnics and a glass of bubbly or two, and settled in for two and a half hours of opera and contemporary-style music at Trafalgar Park on Saturday night. There was no particular crowd favourite amongst the lineup, which included singer Anna Leese, Jared Holt, Jubilation Choir, Jackie Clarke and kiwi icon Dave Dobbyn.

Dad ‘broken’ over daughter’s abuse Andrew Board

A Nelson father has been left frustrated with a court system that has continually failed to lock up the partner of his daughter, despite years of domestic abuse. The father spoke openly with Nelson Weekly, alongside a friend of his daughter, who

also fears for her friend’s safety. The Weekly cannot name any of the people involved due to ongoing legal issues and to protect the identity of the woman and a young child involved. But both the woman’s father and the friend are concerned and upset that her partner has avoided jail despite numerous court

appearances for violence. The latest was late last year when the man appeared in the Nelson District Court for assault. He was given community service. Within a month he would assault his partner again, this time in public, as well as damaging her vehicle. The father says the violence has been on-

going for most of the seven years of their relationship. “It’s been going on for a long time. As has his violence to other people as well, it’s not only domestic violence.” The woman’s friend says she had tried

“It’s not really fair for the store managers to be attacked like that, but yeah, I think the pay should be the same.”

“I don’t think it’s really the owners fault. But, I think it should be even pay nationwide - we’re one country and it’s the same work.”

“I think it probably would have been better if they had tried other avenues.”

“It’s not really fair on the owners, but I guess that’s the nature of protest and they got word out there. The wages should all be the same.”

to support her and urged her to leave her abusive partner, but she keeps getting drawn back in. “Last month, he turned up at a house that she was staying at, despite his bail conditions including he was to have no contact with her. He was playing mind games with her, alternately telling her she was an ugly piece of crap, and then telling her that she was his baby girl and he wished they could have gotten married. “I called the police and they arrested him, but he just got bail again the next day.” The woman’s father says the abuse is physical and emotional. “He is constantly cheating on her too, and because he has managed to erode her self-esteem to an all-time low, he can pretty much get away with anything he wants. He’s just totally controlling.” Nelson Women’s and Children Refuge manager Katie O’Donnell says the story is far from unique in Nelson. “The

problem isn’t going away. But yes, if an offender is back on the street the next day we may not have had time to contact the woman and discuss her safety, and maybe the conditions around him aren’t stringent enough. Absolutely, it’s frustrating. Sometimes we only have a small window to help the family while they’re locked up.” Since February 2015, the refuge has worked with 224 women in the region. This does not count the numbers who call crisis line, asking for advice but do not sign up for the service, which is about as many again. The father says if his daughter’s partner went to jail then she would have the space to rediscover her life and regain confidence without his influence. “Because it’s not just the impact on her, but also her children. Slowly but surely, they’re going to see that violence is okay. Violence is just a way of life. I’m so frustrated by it and it’s kept me broken for years.” He says when the police do arrest

and charge him, the courts let him out time and time again. “He’s been charged with assault so many times, then he does this course and the judge says ‘oh, he’s trying to rehabilitate himself ’. He’s not, he’s done the course twice and is still punching people. “So the judges are making the wrong choice for a sentence. Because within a month of him being sentenced to community service he has then again assaulted my daughter bad enough to be up in front of the courts yet again.” Katie says it’s a horrible situation for many women but she says they’re here to help. “I would encourage any woman in that situation to contact us, because sometimes you can achieve a lot more if you have an agency like ours that can walk alongside you. Because it’s a long journey, it doesn’t just happen overnight.” If you require help from domestic abuse, you can call the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge on 548 3353 or Nelson Police on 546 3840.

Protesters’ rat taunt ‘was a step too far’ Andrew Board

Protesters targeted two local supermarkets over a pay dispute on the weekend, but the use of giant rat to depict the owners of Nelson New World and Pak ‘n Save Richmond has been questioned. The “community protests” were held at both supermarkets on Saturday and Sunday and was organised by members of the First Union, which represents supermarket employees. Around 18 protesters were at New World on Saturday morning and six turned up to the Pak ‘n Save later that day. Organiser Rachel Boyack says most of the protesters were local, however only a couple were actual employees at the supermarket. She says that’s because it wasn’t an official strike, so employees couldn’t leave their workplace to join it. The union is protesting over pay rates, which they say are less for South Island employees. “These two stores have made no attempt to bargain with the union in good faith. Instead they have played silly games with us. They say South Island workers should not be

They were handing out flyers attacking the owners of the stores and urging shoppers to email the owners. Slogans had been designed for both stores, “New Wages” and “Pak ‘n Slave”. The majority of shoppers spoken to by the Weekly say they support workers but they didn’t like the rat being used to attack store owners.

Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Dot Kettle says she doesn’t understand the rat taunt. “I think it’s a step too far and I think it’s disappointing. It seems to me a very personal and unnecessary attack on individuals. Most people would recognise that most businesses are actually run by small business owners who work incredibly hard to create employment opportunities in a sustainable way. Everybody respects the right to protest, but I would like to see us being able to do that in a mature and responsible fashion.”

School lunches are about to become a whole lot healthier at Victory Primary School, with a new healthy lunchbox programme kicking off at the school yesterday morning. and although they have systems in place to deal with those occasions, the healthy lunchbox programme will be well received. “We are also part of the Fruit in Schools and Milk for Schools schemes, but this this is fantastic for our families who may not be able to afford lunch,” she says. Food for Families co-ordinator Martin Reading says the lunches take him about an hour-and-a-half to prepare, and he now has some volunteers on board to help - plus some time-saving techniques, such as using a squirt bottle for the peanut butter. All the food for the lunches is donated by local businesses, with Shamels Essential Foods, Pic’s Peanut Butter, Countdown, New World, Village Milk, and MG Marketing all chipping in. But they are still needing someone to donate plastic containers for the lunches. “It’s always been my intention to start at Victory School. We are getting really good feedback from Stoke School and people are amazed how we can do it for just a gold coin.” Martin says they are looking to expand the programme to other schools, with Tahunanui School a possibility in the near future. Kids can place their orders on Friday and Tuesday mornings.

Dave says the NMIT boat is around six metres in the air and if someone was to fall off it “there is no coming back”. He says if the practice doesn’t stop he will have to close the

wharf. “I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. I could close access right off but that would disadvantage a lot of people who aren’t responsible for this misbehaviour.” The wharf is popular with people fishing, watching the boats come and go or just looking at the view. He says closing the wharf would be a “last resort” and

is hoping that people will start reporting people if they’re seen climbing on other people’s property. “We want people to either urge them to stop jumping on other people’s property or to call the police.”

Former Nelson MP and city councillor Mel Courtney says he will contest this year’s local body elections because the current councillors’ infighting means their minds are not “on the job”. Mel was a Labour MP for Nelson from 1976 until 1981 and a Nelson city councillor. “I love Nelson, it is a very special place in which to live, work, raise a family and then to retire - I want to see that it stays that way,” he says. “Our city councillors are leaders in this community and therefore must at all times provide leadership by example. The recent infighting amongst our elected representatives tells me that their minds are not on the job of managing our city’s affairs. The infighting must stop - you have our assets under your control, please take care of them for us.” Mel says striking the balance between growth and environmental quality is important. “Of course we must strengthen our local economy, provide a better quality of life and build on our local assets, but what I don’t want to see is jobs for job’s sake, or jobs at any price, they need to be a good fit.”

The popular wharf at Wakefield Quay could be closed to the public after several trespass notices have been issued for people jumping off moored boats that don’t belong to them. Nelson harbour-master Dave Duncan says seven trespass orders have been issued in the past month and many others have been spoken to after they were spotted climbing on boats berthed at Wakefield Quay and then jumping from them. Dave says jumping off the wharf has happened for years, but when swimmers climb on other people’s boats, it becomes a problem. “We open the wharf up so people can jump off it, we understand that it’s an activity that people have enjoyed for a long time. I certainly don’t want to close this wharf off but as the harbour-master my hands are tied because I’m responsible for people’s

The machine, which towered over the Centre for several weeks in January, works by mixing cement, lime and water with the existing soil, through a hollow drill. A 100-ton capacity crane was also brought in and roof panels taken out to lift heavy, internal steel strengthening beams in to place. The crane had to be set up outside the Centre as the interior timber floor is not designed to withstand the weight of heavy machinery. Work will now continue to strengthen and brace the centre, develop the new northern building and landscape Rutherford Park for events planned later in the year.

Weeds start to take over Stoke stream, Tuesday, January 19: Stream edges in Stoke should be starting to look much tidier, with Nelson City Council making good progress on spraying and removing weeds along Orchard Stream. Alec Louverdis, group manager works and infrastructure, says that Nelmac have manually removed the arum lilies, and the stems and most of the other problem weeds have been chemically treated. Orphanage Creek and the section between the Railway Reserve and Masefield St have also been treated. Alec says that it takes a few weeks for the weeds to die off, and that the grass and other growth on the rock banks and in the bed of the stream will be retained as this helps shade the waterways, which in turn provides a better habitat for aquatic life and fish within the stream. Wairau Warrior, Tuesday, February 9: David Trotter’s givealittle page has risen by around $700 since his article in the Nelson Weekly, around half the total needed for his off-road wheelchair that will be helping him make it round the Wairau Warrior 6km race. With six and a half weeks left before the race, David and his team are still after donations at givealittle. co.nz and by searching for David Trotter.

Rick says they are encouraging the public to attend during daylight hours only, and the late night observations will be left to the professionals. He recommends people come armed with a smart phone or tablet, sensible footwear, food, drink, warm clothing, insect repellent, and equipment such as magnifying glasses, binoculars and plastic jars.

Nelson nature lovers are invited to come and discover the biodiversity of The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary next weekend, in a 24hour “bioblitz.” The purpose of the bioblitz, which is being run in conjunction with Friends of the Maitai, is to discover and document what lives in the sanctuary. Scientists and professionals will join members of the public in the blitz which kicks off at 9am next Saturday. Rick Field, project coordinator and educator at the sanctuary, says they will monitor five areas, covering the forest floor, canopy and the Brook Stream. “We’re hoping to monitor fish and bats as there hasn’t been much monitoring done in the heart of the sanctuary,” he says. “But, you never know what’s going to turn up.” Rick is also encouraging people who want to participate to down-

Kaka chicks arrive at Natureland Natureland keepers are playing parents to four Kaka chicks as part of a new breeding-for-release project and while the birds may be small, their voices are not. Natureland keeper Jenny Pettigrew says the chicks arrived two weeks ago and will breed the next generation of Kaka to be released into the Abel Tasman National Park. “Kaka usually have four chicks at a time, so DOC left mum and dad with two and brought two to us, the idea being that when they get old enough they will start

breeding and we’ll release their offspring back into the Wainui Valley.” Jenny says it’s absolutely amazing to have this kind of project at Natureland. “This is what you get into this line of work to do. “I came back to New Zealand to work with Kaka so it’s uber awesome being able to do this with such an amazing species like the Kaka, they’re so intelligent, so funny and so awesome in every way," she says. “The idea is to basically turn Natureland

reporter@nelsonlive.co.nz into a little breeding-for-release centre as well as the zoo.” Temporarily named Blue, Green, Red and Yellow after the coloured tags around their legs, Jenny says the group are already developing personalities. “Blue and Green are definitely more outgoing but they’re all finding their adult

Kaka voices now, up until a few days ago they were only making a soft noise - now they’ve discovered screaming,” Jenny says with a grin. Natureland are working at opening up the aviaries within the next few weeks so the public can get a closer look at the Kaka chicks currently housed in the nursery section of Natureland’s new aviaries.

Former Nayland Navy ship comes to town to celebrate 75th anniversary dux wins Rhodes Scholarship Former Nayland College Dux, Kimberley Savill, has been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for 2016. Kimberley, 22, was Dux at Nayland and won the NZQA Outstanding Scholar Award in 2011. She subsequently completed a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours at Victoria University where she won Victoria Excellence Scholarships and New Zealand Institute of Chemistry prizes during every year of her degree. The Rhodes scholarship is awarded to 89 students from 32 different countries each year and covers study fees, accommodation and living costs for three years at Oxford. Academic achievement, leadership and commitment to service are all criteria for receiving the award. A post on the Nayland College Facebook page from Kimberley says “a significant share of the credit for this definitely goes to Nayland. I couldn’t have asked for better teachers, or more opportunities to grow, than I found as a student here.” Kimberley Savill At Oxford, Kimberley in 2011. will study for a Doctorate in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. She says a desire to contribute and give something back shapes her studies. She is keen to make a difference through science research, particularly in chemistry to address immediate and important challenges to renewable energy and storage technologies. A skilled debater, Kimberley was a member of the Victoria University Debating Team which participated in the World Universities Debating Championships in Malaysia earlier this year. She is a volunteer campus coach at Victoria University to help new students settle into life on campus and volunteers at open days as an ambassador.

Wow, this truly wonderful Kimberley! Congratulations and enjoy your journey ahead. Clare Prangley. Awesome Kimberley! Happy, happy future. Nola Timpson. Tap water tasting funny? Who's tap water tastes disgusting? I'm on Waimea Rd and the water is undrinkable now I am having to buy water for my daughter to drink, though as she points out two litres of coke is much cheaper to buy. I thought Nelson had a pretty new water treatment plant? Are my rates staying the same even though I am not getting drinkable water? Or is it all part of the grand plan to force Nelson residents to pay for Tasman growers to get their new dam?? Graeme O'Brien. Trafalgar Centre works: What a crop of s&*^, everything Nelson Council gets involved in turns out late and over budget. Sack them all next election. Many of the guys who worked on the Trafalgar Centre still live in Nelson, they did the foundations, they say you are nuts, and what about the Cathedral and Nelson College? One of these guys did his apprenticeship with Bill Gibbons in the early 1960s and I would trust him before any of you fools. Philip Guard.

This building should be converted into a piggery! It's useless for anything else, the pigs could free range on the playing field at Trafalgar Park, that's another under-utilised waste of ratepayers money! At least we could get some decent kiwi bacon!! Robert Webber. Protest over wages: There shouldn't be any difference in pay between both Islands, it's damn ridiculous and I don't blame them for protesting. Brenda Kenny. Petty. If he were a rat he would be attacking hard working New Zealanders for making a living. Unlike some people, he was hard at work for this country's economy and his family. Myah Guy-Oakes. andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz A book translated into four languages to educate people about domestic violence has today been launched in Victory. Gayle Petch of Keep Victory Safe has been behind the plan to put an anti-domestic violence book into 200 Housing New Zealand homes in Victory. The book – called There is No Excuse for Abuse – is specifically designed for Nelson families. Gayle says the biggest problem when putting the book together was making sure the content could be understood by people living in those homes. "Most of the people in those homes are former refugees so we had to translate the book into several different languages." Once the mammoth task to translate the material was done, Gayle expanded her brief to include information from other local agencies. A booklet from Civil Defence, Police and the Red Cross will accompany the book in a folder that will be attached to the Housing NZ homes. The heart was made by the good folk at the Waimea Menzshed and it was totally covered in notes of love from our wonderful shoppers. Thank you for all the lovely declarations of love. We hope everyone had a great day. • The pedestrian crossings and safe zones by the Fresh Choice entrance are now completed. This will make it safer for people to get from their cars to the Mall. • The raised walkway by the eastern entrance is on track to be completed by the end of February, when we will be looking at the doing some landscaping. Some car parks have been out of use while this work has been ongoing, but the safety for shoppers will be greatly improved, so we’re really looking forward to it being finished.

Nelson man rides NZ for charity Locally Owned and Operated

Simon Bloomberg

Gordon Sloane is expecting to see some amazing scenery, meet new friends and experience pain and suffering, when he rides in the 3000km Tour Aotearoa cycle ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff starting on Sunday. But what the popular Nelson multisport athlete really hopes to achieve during the epic off-road tour is to raise as much money as possible for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Gordon is one of the many riders on the tour who is supporting a charity and he is asking people to make a donation to the hospice if he can complete the ride in under 30 days. “When I thought about doing it as a charity ride, the first organisation that came to mind was the hospice,” Gordon says. “I don’t have any links or ties with it - it’s just that they do such a great job for the community.” Gordon is confident he will be able to complete the self-supported journey in less than 30 days although he knows there will be plenty of challenges along the way. The 3000km route will traverse some of the country’s remotest roads and tracks as well as many of the new cycle ways, including

the Tasman Great Taste Trail. “I’ve been training for about three-months and done some really long rides to get up to speed. I’ve ridden from Nelson to Christchurch through the Rainbow a couple times and did a big ride on the West Coast Cycle Trail with Mike Brien. “I think I’m fit enough but it’s going to need more than just fitness. I’m going to have to eat and drink well and make sure I look after my body as well. “There’s also things like the weather to contend with. When I did one of my training rides through the Rainbow, it was so windy I had to walk my bikes across the bridges because I was worried about getting blown into the river. “But that didn’t help because it was so windy it blew my bike off the ground. I had to lie across it to hold it down - it was incredible.” Gordon has set-up a new titaniumframed bike especially for the tour and it includes extra water bottle holders, aerobars and bags that fit neatly into the bike’s frame to make it more aerodynamic. The whole set-up, including a tent, sleeping bag and spare clothes, weighs 25kg. “I’ve got a lightweight tent but I

will try to avoid camping when I can because it’s so slow. I’ll be staying in motels and bed and breakfast places whenever I can it will be nice to get a shower after a long day in the saddle too.” Gordon says all riders must carry a spot tracker and their progress can be followed on a web-site touraotearoa.nz. Riders also have to take a selfie with their bikes at 30 specified locations and send it to the race organisers to “prove they were there”. Gordon starts in the first of three waves of 100 riders at Cape Reinga on Sunday. The second wave leaves on February 23 and the third on February 26 to avoid congestion at the Hokianga Harbour ferry crossing, which is one of five boat rides included in the tour. If anyone wants to donate to Gordon’s hospice ride email gordon@naturalchoice.org.nz for details of a bank account. Gordon is covering all of his own expenses for the tour and all donations will be paid to the hospice. Another Nelson cyclist Jill Clendon is also fundraising during the ride, nominating Achilles International NZ as her charity.

are always on the lookout for others to join them. New stock is also much appreciated, although it must be in good condition for its new owners, and if it’s a large item, the ReStore offers a pick up service at no cost. There is a drop off point available for people to donate their unwanted belongings, but the store asks that anyone planning on doing this contact them beforehand on 547 4626. The team is also happy to offer a delivery service for a small fee.

Habitat for Humanity believes that everyone should have a decent place to live and you can do your part for local Habitat housing projects by simply supporting the ReStore, because ‘every sale bangs a nail’. The homes that were dedicated last Saturday were the 22nd and 23rd in the region, which is a great achievement for the not-for-profit organisation and means a number of families are now living in comfortable, healthy homes.

ntinues to build for local families

o deserving Nelson families have n handed the keys to their brandw Habitat for Humanity homes, ich will help to unlock a warmer, er and happier life.

Nelson Habitat for Humanity chairperson Rob Silcock says that their aim is for everyone in the world to have a decent, clean, dry home to live in.

dedication for the homes, which located on Kawai St, took place Saturday to welcome the families o their new abodes. Friends, family, d members from the Habitat for manity board all gathered to ebrate the occasion.

“We have two lovely homes for two lovely families, and it’s a great feeling to be able to hand over the keys to their brand-new homes,” he says. “We have now helped 23 families into 23 houses in Nelson, and we take a lot of pleasure from that.”

17

The Ning Ching family, who are the proud new owners of one of the homes, say that they feel “very thankful” for everything that has been done for them. “We have been truly blessed to have been given this opportunity to own our own home,” says husband and father Cung Thla Uk. “When we got the news that we had a Habitat for Humanity home, we were really excited. This is a wonderful thing for my family and we are very happy to be here today.” The proud owners of the other house are the Thian Hlun family, and husband and father John says they are looking forward to moving into their lovely new home. “I would like to express my thanks to Habitat for Humanity and the community who have contributed,” he says. “We are very excited.” The families were presented with native Kowhai trees to plant in their new gardens, and will both be settling into their new homes this week.

The Children’s Garden is a brandnew centre that has the best interests of both parents and children at heart. Committed to offering quality early childhood care, inspired by the Pikler approach, The Children’s Garden is also proud to go above and beyond for its families. The full time service takes care of some of the more mundane chores such as preparing children’s daily meals, which means one less thing for parents to worry about during their busy morning routine. Natasha and Mark Kibble are excited to be launching the centre, which will benefit from Natasha’s 20 years experience in early childhood care and education. Natasha has carried out extensive study into the Pikler approach at the Pikler Institute in Budapest and, as a result, children will benefit from a consistent learning environment and the freedom to explore nature inside and outside the centre. For more information on the centre’s philosophy or to enrol your child, contact Natasha or Mark today.

Playcentres prepare for the Big Play Out Nelson Playcentres Association are holding a Big Play Out to celebrate the value of play this Saturday. In the past few years there has been an increased awareness in the value of play for young children. Children learn through playing, not through long periods of sitting listening to someone else talk. They want to try it for themselves, experiment, laugh, connect, make sense of the world around them and test their boundaries and limits. To celebrate this, families are invited to the Tahunanui sports field from 11am - 2pm on Saturday, February 20. Nelson’s fourteen Playcentres will be there,

Sausages, cookie decorating and raffles will also be on offer as fundraisers for the region’s individual centres. Playcentre would like to thank the Nelson City Council for supporting this event.

Woodburner submissions close tomorrow Submissions on the Woodburner Plan Change close tomorrow and Nelsonians are being reminded to have their say. The plan change proposes to allow additional Ultra Low Emission Burners, on the basis there will be improvements to woodburner use, generating less smoke. A limited number of burners are proposed to be allowed in Stoke, Wakatu, Enner Glynn, Port Hills, City Centre, The Brook, The Wood and Atawhai. If there are further improvements to air quality over the next few years,

the plan change proposes that burners could also become permitted in Bishopdale, Victory, Toi Toi, between the colleges, Washington Valley, Tahunanui and Tahunanui Hills south of The Cliffs. Submissions must be in by no later than 5pm tomorrow, and if you didn’t receive a submission form in your letterbox, you can have your say online at http://nelson.govt.nz/council/consultations/open-consultations/woodburner-planchange/.

Dempster brothers prove to be kings of the court Mike Pero Nelson Giants captain Sam Dempster joined forces with his two younger brothers, Aaron and Nathan, to win the Burger King 3x3 Quest Tour three-on-three basketball tournament at the Tahunanui Beach Reserve tennis courts on Saturday. The Dempster’s Team Stoke won the open men’s final played in hot, sunny conditions against Team James Anderson 22-10, to secure a place in the national final of the series in Auckland’s Aotea Square on April 2. The winner of that tournament will receive an all expenses paid trip to the World Tour Masters in Beijing. “It seemed to be a good day out,” Nelson Basketball Association general manager Pete McNae says. “There were 22 teams and there were very good numbers through the

ve L X-it Ant - for exterior ant control .co.nz

X-it Ant

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer now here, it is time to act and control the population on and around your property. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait. If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product.

Benefits of using X-It Ant:  Efficacy against all ant species in New Zealand including Argentine and Darwin Ants.  Can be used on all exterior surfaces including trees, lawns, concrete paths and the exterior of buildings.  Rainfast after 1 hour of sunlight.  Control of ants for months, depending on the surface treated.  Forms a non-repellent barrier that ensures uptake of chemical when walked on by ants.

www.keyindustries.co.nz

The last few seasons have seen the use of a now tried-and-proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, different products to achieve ant control. To get the best result from your X-It Ant application your sprayer must have no spray residue from the previous use of insecticides (e.g. Ripcord®Plus) Best results are achieved when a new sprayer is used and only X-IT Ant is used in it. X-It Ant works by being non-repellent to ants so that when they walk over the dried spray residue they pick up the insecticide on their feet and take it back to the nest where the ants preen each other, and thereby pass the insecticide onto other ants, including the queen. Ant colony control is achieved once the queens are dead. You must know where the ants are for successful treatment, so a full inspection of the property is

required, so check all these places: Sleepers, trees, curb and channelling, driveways, paths, gardens, compost heaps, all fences including the wire or boards, rails and posts, pergolas and plants growing on them. Firewood piles, downpipes, rubbish bins, bbq’s, outdoor furniture, pot plants, vehicles, decks and any trees over-hanging the boundary. The best time to look for ants is when the temperature is warm, before it is too hot.

1. X-It Ant™: 225ml pack (Only use OUTDOORS).

Spray all ant trails, path edges, driveway edges, curb & channelling, fences including posts, rails, pergola posts, etc. Tree trunks require a minimum 1 metre band up and around them. Bushes / plants that touch the house need to be pruned so that they no longer do so. Spray a 1 metre band up and out all the way around the exterior of the house.

2. Bi Force® Granules: 5kg or 500g shaker pack In gardens, long grass, compost, and any areas where X-It Ant™ cannot be applied successfully.

3. Dust 2 Dust™: 100g puffer pack Use for the killing of ants in wall and ceiling cavities, cracks and crevices, under inaccessible decking, under cupboards and into retaining walls, also great for Wasps. Business Update. Adv.

With the water temperatures averaging a very warm 22 degrees in the bay, it makes fishing a little hard at the moment. Waitangi Day holiday proved to be calm and warm, so we headed to the spat farm to check out the kingfish action, as there is always a chance of a good fight with these fish. Arriving at our destination at 6.45am, we pulled up next to a marker at the edge of the spat farm, and used stick baits and poppers in the water to see if there was any interest. Within the first three casts, a kingfish took the lure and gave our daughter a good fight. Although only a rat, (smaller than the legal 75cm), Sophie enjoyed the thrill of pulling in her first kingfish. It had foul-hooked itself on its back,

so took us a bit to get the lure out before a quick photo and a release back into the water. We trolled a bit to another location, and again what felt like a monster kingi took our lure quickly. However, within three minutes it had pulled itself free, with my brand new lure with it. Frustrating as it was, we kept trying, but had no further luck. We headed back in, and drifted for a few kawahai after coming across a bird work up, and we managed two small fish which will be nice for sashimi tonight. All in all, although we didn’t come back with much, it was a beautiful day on the water. Our next club meeting is Sunday, February 14 at the Richmond Room, Club Waimea at 4pm. Email us at mail@dawnbreakers.co.nz if you are interested in joining our club.

ADVENTURE RACING: Nelson's Elina Ussher secured her third Coast to Coast Longest Day title by winning the women's multisport race in 13hours, 32minutes, 41seconds on Saturday. Elina had won the race in 2010 and 2012. Nelson's Brent Edwards finished sixth in the men's race in 12hr 43min 41sec while David Ayre was ninth in 13hr 3min 20sec. Joe MacIntyre won the M50-59 race in 14hr 3min 5sec while Tim Bygate finished in 16hr 47min 59sec. RUNNING: Nelson runner

SportS Phil Costley won the Buller Gorge Half Marathon race on Saturday in a fast 1hr 12min 9sec. John Rudge won the M60-69 half marathon in 1hr 26min 51sec while Stu Cottam was second in the full marathon in 2hr 59min 48sec. CYCLING: Robin Reid completed a double in the Tasman Wheelers club champs held at the weekend, winning Saturday's time trial in 32min 37sec before taking out Sunday's road race in 1hr 54min 43sec,

2min 57sec ahead of Chris Sharland. Britta Martin won Saturday's senior women's time trial and finished second in a sprint finish to Karen Fulton in the road race. SWIMMING: Nelson's Kerry Mathieson (F45-49), Janis Crampton (F55-59), Margaret Johnston (F60-64) and Derek Eaton (70-74) won gold medals in latest round of the New Zealand Ocean Swim series held over 3.3km in Corsair Bay in Christchurch on Saturday. Luke Kelly (M15-19) and Kirstin Ramsay (F30-34) won bronze medals.

MOTOR SHOW: Stu Warren of Stoke with his 1957 Ford Ranch Wagon at the Nelson Motor Show on Saturday. The show got off to a good start on Friday with the Lake Hop and Friday Night Cruz, which beat last year's record by four cars with 240 entries. The public show then got underway on Saturday and Sunday, attracting hundreds of car owners from clubs around the country, along with several food stalls and trade sites. Stu bought his pride and joy two years ago from the importer in Christchurch, the vehicle was originally built in America as a drag car. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Stoke fall short of one-day crown Car Company Stoke-Nayland were always going to battle to win their Nelson premier oneday club cricket game at the Marsden Rec on Saturday after Wanderers scored 289 for five on the back of an unbeaten 130 by Joe O'Connor. And that proved to be the case, with Stoke-Nayland being dismissed for 214 with 1.1 overs remaining.

Although Stoke-Nayland openers Kurt Pahl (28) and Chris Dittmer (42) made an encouraging start to their run chase, none of the batsmen were able to produce the big innings their team needed to get them across the line. In contrast, Joe had earlier batted through the Wanderers' innings, hitting 10 fours and four sixes in his impressive, match-

winning knock. Tom Cross also batted well, contributing a typically hardhit 49 that included five big sixes. In other games, Athletic College Old Boys beat Nelson College by six wickets at the Botanics and Post Boy Hotel Wakatu beat Bar 321 Waimea Toi Toi United by five wickets at Victory Square.

Nessie, Wendy, Sharon, John and David wish to thank all those who made a difficult and sad time easier for us. Mannix fought a long courageous battle eased by company (including long phone calls) of treasured friends with ongoing support for himself and family. Special thanks to his Dr, Steve Delany, Brenda & the Hospice Team, Presbyterian Support, those who visited, provided food, wine, hugs and shared in the laughter and tears. Importantly you helped us fulfil his wishes to remain at home. We will be forever grateful. To those who also assisted in Mannix’s Memorial Service, Rev Derek McNicol, Warren Fenemore, Alan Brown, Village Café catering, Val and Laurie Anisy – warm and sincere thanks. To all who sent flowers, cards, attended the service, please accept this as a personal acknowledgement. Grieving his loss, we take strength in memories and times shared.
